The Most Common Side Effects of Sleeping Pills

Sleeping pills and other orally-ingested sedatives are a common remedy for those sleepless nights. Although some sleeping pills and major sedatives require prescription, something as simple as a drowsy antihistamine is commonly used as a “sleeping medication” to induce sleep. It would make sense since it’s the quickest and easiest “solution” against sleepless or uncomfortable nights. But it’s often ignored that sleeping pills can be harmful under certain circumstances.

In this article, you’ll learn about the most common but often forgotten side-effects of sleeping pills. The following points should provide enough reason for you to remove them from your options when choosing a method to make your slumbers during the night smoother and more peaceful.

Drowsiness at the wrong time
Drowsiness. Well of course, right? That’s how you know if the sleeping pills are taking effect. They indeed do their job by making you sleepy, but you don’t really have complete control over when you’ll exactly start feeling sleep. What you can do is take it at the same hour you plan to sleep and hope that it’ll kick in immediately and that it won’t have any negative effects on you once you’re awake and ought to be awake. Note that there are no promises that you won’t be sleepy while on your way to work.

Confusion and disorientation
Also a way of telling if those pills are working – if they make you sleepy and groggy. Grogginess may seem normal when within the confines of your bedroom, but just like drowsiness as a whole, you have to take it as a package – unfortunately even when you don’t want it, like say, in the middle of a working day. Again, there are no promises that your mind will be up and active when you want it to be.

Increased forgetfulness
This is kind of related to the previous side-effect. Having a brain that’s high on sedatives will not help with even its most basic functions. Not only does it take away your alertness, but it also induces prolonged forgetfulness. This usually happens the day after waking up from a night with sleep induced by a sleeping pill. It’s hard to say exactly when it will start or stop, so I think it’s better if you skip the pill instead if you know that you can’t afford having this symptom of forgetfulness, especially if you work requires a lot of brain functions.

Dependence and addiction
This is probably the most dangerous of all. Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Heath Ledger, and even Michael Jackson – it is possible that their wouldn’t have been so premature if they did not ingest an overdose of sleeping pills (at least to contribute to whatever illnesses they had.) No one just wakes up one day and decides you know what, I’ll be addicted to sleeping pills and chugs down a whole bottle. It starts little by little until it grows into an addiction. The more you take sleeping pills, the more tolerant your body becomes to it and the more you need to take in order for it to take effect. It begins a never-ending cycle that only truly comes to a halt when you die.

It’s not like I actually want to write to you about all these grim things. I’m doing you a favor by warning you about the bad effects of sleeping pills. We’re not completely against sleeping pills here in Uratex; it’s just that we know that having a better mattress will provide a more long-term solution for any insomniac out there, because we care. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that an ounce of prevention is better than a funeral or a lengthy and expensive hospital bill. The best way would be to fix your sleeping habits. It’s all about getting the right Z’s the right way
